Ria Ivandić, University of Oxford and London School of Economics: Gender Gaps From Labour Market Shocks

Dr. Ria Ivandić is a Lecturer in Political Economy at the University of Oxford and a Researcher at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She is also a Fellow at Harris Manchester College (University of Oxford) and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Zagreb. She obtained a PhD in Economics from the Department of Political Economy at King's College London in 2019, and previously an MSc in Economics from the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). Her research interests are political economy, labour economics and applied econometrics.


She is one of the investigators on a UKRI funded research project on the 'Outreach to Domestic Abuse Victims in Times of Quarantine’. Dr. Ivandić has worked on a number of policy-oriented analysis and research projects for institutions such as the Home Office, All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs), the National Crime Agency, and many more. Her work has been cited in newspapers such as the Guardian, The Telegraph, the BBC and the Economist and in parliamentary debates on policies around domestic abuse.

Mia Mikić is a trade economist with a keen interest in sustainable development and with a proven track record and experience in academia and international civil service. She is a member of the Friends of Multilateralism Group.


She is currently an Advisor at Large for the Asia-Pacific Research and Training Network on Trade (ARTNeT), an open network of research and academic institutions and think-tanks in the Asia-Pacific region. She is also a Visiting fellow at the Institute for Euro-Asian Studies, the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb and a Research Fellow at the Waikato Management School, The University of Waikato, New Zealand. Mia was appointed as a member of the International Advisory Board for the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in August 2021 for a period of two years. She is providing advisory services in a broad area of trade, development and global governance as a member of advisory boards, consultancy as well as journal editorial boards. She is collaborating with several universities on modernising international trade curricula.


She was a Director, Trade, Investment and Innovation Division in United Nations ESCAP (2017-2021). Prior to her 16-year UN tenure, during 2001 to 2005 she was Head of the Department of Economic Theory, Professor of International Economics and Director of Economic and Business International Program at the University of Zagreb, and Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland (1988-2005). She held various academic and teaching positions at the University of Zagreb from 1978 to 1988.


She is the author of many books, reports, and papers and has edited or co-edited several volumes on international economics, regional integration, and development. Between 2009 and 2020, she oversaw preparation of Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report (APTIR), a flagship publication in area of trade and investment. Her current research and advisory work focus on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on trade and Global Value Chains, frontier technologies and inclusive future of work, advocating for women as influencers in policymaking, services trade, and promotion of evidence-based policymaking.

She designed, run and/or served as a resource person of more than 40 regional or national trade policy and the WTO-related courses in the organization of United Nations ESCAP, FAO, WTO, UNCTAD and other institutions for government officials, NGO representatives, members of academia and businesspeople.

She has a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Zagreb (1985), Masters of International Business from St. Mary’s College of California (1981), and Bachelors of International Trade, University of Zagreb (1978).
